The mission of the Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) is to accelerate the development and large-scale deployment of solar technologies in the United States and to ensure that solar power is a viable and economic source for the Nation’s power needs. SETO’s near-term focus is to lead the SunShot initiative to reduce the cost of electricity from solar by 75%, making it competitive with conventional forms of generation by the end of the decade. Toward that end, SETO directs a balanced program of technology planning, research, development, test, analysis, evaluation, and communication that will increase the viability of solar energy technologies, including photovoltaic and concentrated solar power, as clean, competitive, reliable power options for use in end-use sectors of the economy.
A successful candidate in this position will develop goals and objectives based on a thorough and deep technical understanding of integration of solar energy technologies onto the electricity grid and related industry and market needs; advise the Department of Energy management on relevant policy directives and assure that they are properly executed and that research tasks are directed toward meeting approved goals and objectives; and direct and coordinate the execution of programs through interaction with appropriate headquarter elements and supporting Department of Energy field offices and contractors.

As a General Engineer, you will:
- Evaluate progress of research tasks towards meeting technical and programmatic objectives. Conduct periodic reviews including site visits to examine technical and administrative issues affecting execution of approved plans and make recommendations for improvements in research content. Facilitate the transfer of technology improvements in his/her assigned areas of program responsibility through direct contacts with industry representatives and attendance at industry forums.
- Develop plans and implements studies for the organization in the pursuit of cooperative research and development ventures with industry and universities and directs the review, evaluation and selection of new research tasks. Evaluate unsolicited proposals for scientific merit, technical feasibility and relevance to program goals and DOE policy requirements.
- Provide input to briefing materials, papers, reports and responses to inquiries for both internal and external distribution; make presentations on program and program group objectives, content and progress to a variety of professional audiences.
