Privacy Policy

The American Solar Energy Society (“ASES”) places a high priority on protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy (“Privacy Policy”) was created in order to ensure ASES’ firm commitment to the privacy of our members and website users. This Privacy Policy explains what type of information is collected by ASES’ website, www.ases.org, and how this information is used.

We will not collect, use, disclose, transfer, or store your information other than as disclosed in this Privacy Policy.  When you access the www.ases.org website, you accept the guidelines set out in this Privacy Policy. Please read this policy with care before visiting and browsing our website.

What Personally Identifiable Information Is Collected

ASES members who register for www.ases.org and individuals who sign up to receive e-communications from ASES voluntarily provide us with contact information (such as name and e-mail address). We may use this information for specific, limited purposes. You may always “opt out,” either now or at any time in the future, if you do not wish to receive our messages.

IP addresses

ASES uses your IP address to help diagnose problems with our server, to administer www.ases.org, and to use statistical metrics used to track website visitor traffic.

Cookies

Our website www.ases.org uses “cookie” messages to automatically help provide better services. They remind us who you are and show your preferences for our website based on what you’ve done and told us before. The “cookie” is placed in your computer and is read when you come back to our website. Cookies let us take you to the information and features you’re particularly interested in. They also let us track your usage of www.ases.org, so we know which parts of our sites are most popular. You can reject cookies or cancel them by instructing your web browser accordingly.

How Your Information May Be Used

We use your personal information to provide you with personalized service, including but not limited to providing e-mail alerts to you, responding to your requests, and processing your membership application. Personal information is data that can be used to uniquely identify or contact a single person. ASES and its affiliates and partners may share this personal information with each other and use it, consistent with this Privacy Policy.  They may also combine it with other information to provide and improve their programs, services, content, and advertising. You may choose to opt out at any time, which will cease all communications from us. We may also use your personal information to track visitors of our website. This lets us see which of our features are the most popular so we can better serve our users’ needs. It also lets us provide aggregate data about our traffic (not identifying you personally, but showing how many visitors used which features, for example) to outside parties. Any information you submit through www.ases.org, or directly to ASES separately via email, telephone or other method, may be used, stored and collected by ASES to respond.

We may also use personal information for internal purposes such as auditing, data analysis, and research to improve ASES’ services and member communications. ASES will not rent, sell, or barter your personal information to third parties or act in a way dissimilar to what is stated in this Privacy Policy.

Email Privacy

ASES does not provide, sell, or rent email addresses or other personal/contact information to anyone outside the organization. We consider our chapters and our technical divisions to be inside the organization.

On occasion, we may send you email on behalf of one or more of our partners.

Our website www.ases.org includes links to external websites. These links do not fall under the www.ases.org domain, and the American Solar Energy Society is not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of external websites. Your use of any linked website is solely at your own risk.

Service Providers

ASES shares personal information with companies who provide services such as information processing, extending credit, fulfilling member payments, managing and enhancing member data, providing member service, assessing your interest in ASES, and conducting member research or satisfaction surveys. These companies are obligated to protect your information and may be located wherever ASES operates.

Others

It may be necessary − by law, legal process, litigation, and/or requests from public and governmental authorities within or outside your country of residence − for ASES to disclose your personal information. We may also disclose information about you if we determine that for purposes of national security, law enforcement, or other issues of public importance, disclosure is necessary or appropriate. Law enforcement can typically legally read your email.

We may also disclose information about you if we determine that disclosure is reasonably necessary to enforce our terms and conditions or protect our operations or users. Additionally, in the event of a reorganization, merger, or sale, we may transfer any and all personal information we collect to the relevant third party.

Children

We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected the personal information of a child under 13, we will take steps to delete the information as soon as possible.

Third-Party Sites and Services

ASES websites, applications, and services may contain links to third-party websites, products, and services. ASES’ website and services may also use or offer products or services from third parties. Information collected by third parties, which may include such things as location data or contact details, is governed by their privacy practices. Please review the privacy practices of those third parties.
