Tour Description:  This 3 hour walking tour will visit 4 sites, including strawbale and underground homes. You will see passive solar building designs that heat in the winter and cool in the summer. Tour Description:  New this year. The 15 kilowatt solar PV system consistently generates more electricity than this home uses on a sunny day, sending the excess power back to the grid where it is used to help power neighboring homes.  On a sunny day this time of year, this system produces as much power as the home uses in a 24 hour period.  This may be the largest residential grid tie PV system in Alabama.

Date: The National Solar Tour in Alaska will be held on Saturday August 23, 2008 to coincide with the annual Renewable Energy Fair at the Chena Hot Springs Resort.

Tour Description:  The first stop on the tour is the Cold Climate Housing Research Center (CCHRC) to pick up maps of the tour.  Learn about the solar panels at CCHRC that are generating electricity that we sell to our local utility.  Check out the solar hot water collectors that allow us to turn off our boilers in May. The final destination on the tour is the Chena Hot Springs (www.chenahotsprings.com) Annual Renewable Fair.  Tour hours are from 10:00 AM to 6:00 Pm.

LIVING WITH THE SUN - VALLEY STYLE
2008 Solar and Sustainable Buildings Tour                                    
        October 18, 19 2008

In these times of rising energy and resource costs and concerns , some Arizona residents are living energy secure and  environmentally sound in buildings that are healthy , resource efficient and lower cost to heat and cool.

The   Living With the Sun - Valley Style - 2008  Solar and Sustainable  Buildings tour features solar, Green and sustainable buildings that are energy and water efficient, healthy, cost effective and  environmentally sound. Solar and sustainable building owners across the Valley will be opening up their homes and sites to show and share  a wide range of  technologies and  techniques of solar, Green, and sustainable design and construction, and to share their experiences and knowledge.

The Valley tour has been identified as a Valley component of the American Solar Energy Association’s National Tour of Solar and Sustainable Buildings, occurring across the county in October. The largest event of its kind, it is expected to have over 150,000 visitors in this educational effort, and the Valley tour, part of Arizona’s month of tours in communities around the State, is larger than ever with over 20 sites and residences with a great cross section of techniques, technologies, materials, and strategies.

The FREE, SELF-GUIDED  Valley tour sites  features a variety of buildings from
*  a new, LEED certified Platinum residence in Phoenix
* an energy efficient, solar powered earth integrated house in Mesa
* a straw bale desert house in Apache Junction
* several energy and sustainable remodeled residences
* a LEED certified Scottsdale Fire Station
* new solar energy and resource efficient developments in the East and West Valley and much, much more.

The LIVING WITH THE SUN -VALLEY STYLE tour covers two days, Saturday October 18 and Sunday, October 19, with Owner and project participants talks and guided tours occurring on the hour, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on both days.  See the technologies of energy independence and security and resource efficiency; learn the techniques of going Green and solar and how it can save money and resources;  meet the everyday people and experts who will be sharing their knowledge of energy and resource efficient, healthy, and environmentally responsible design and construction. This tour is guaranteed to have something for everyone and visitors will come away with  appropriate, cost effective actions ideas and actions for their own residences.

The Valley tour is put on by the collaboration of the Arizona Solar Energy Association (State Chapter of the American Solar Energy Society), the Arizona Solar Center - an Az. non-profit collaborative,  and the City of Scottsdale Green Building Program Guidebooks  for the Valley Tour, with descriptions and locations of the sites,  will be available at various Valley locations as well as downloadable off the Arizona Solar Center web site - www.azsolarcenter.com

Part of the statewide Living With the Sun - Arizona Style, 2008 Tours of Solar and Sustainable Buildings, the Gardner Ranch will provide guided tours of the facility at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m.  and 3:00 p.m. Each tour  includes a guided tour of the facilities, and a relaxed, sit-down question and answer interaction, with refreshments, about the owner experiences, and references about the technologies used.
 
See a variety of solar and sustainable elements such as
* the straw bale construction home with cooling tower,
* radiant heat systems ,
* power generation sources including  24 volt and 110 applications,
* the swimming pool powered by solar eneregy,
* the springs and resource efficient watering systems for the ranch,
* a variety of  buildings with a number of insulation techniques and heating systems, and much more.

The tour will also include a demonstration and discussion of food production
- the ranch vegetable and herb garden, and show how natural resources, such as the springs, are utilized for more than just domestic use.

DIRECTIONS TO THE RANCH
NEAR Kingman Arizona  the Ranch can be accessed 2 ways
** Hwy 68 (highway from Kingman to BullHead City)
>From Highway 68,  go North on Estrella Rd 5 miles (graded) to Jurassic
>Dr.;
turn West 5 miles (graded road) to the ranch property.

** HWY 93 (highway from Kingman to Las Vegas), 
>From Highway 93 turn off on Hermit Rd. west, (mile marker 58) to Glenn
Canyon; turn south (right) to Y in road (Troy); turn west (right) to Estrella; turn south (left) to Jurassic Dr.;  turn west (right) 5 miles to ranch. THIS IS ALL GRADED

Instructions for Taking This Tour:  Tours begin at 9AM in the Village of Oak Creek at Verde Valley School Rd and Jacks Canyon. There are several homes to visit in VOC. Then proceed up 179 to see a home in Sky Mountain Ranch. Then up to Oak Creek Canyon just past Garlands to visit a Craftsman-style solar home. After lunch visit homes in West Sedona and down Red Rock Loop Road. Also, from 10-4, Mason Rumney will host tours at his unique dome home out past Bear Mountain.

Part of the Arizona Solar Energy Association statewide Living With the Sun - Arizona Style 2008 Tour of Solar and Sustainable Buildings, two Winslow residences will be open to the public for tours and lectures of eco-sustainable living.

** The Kenna Urban Homestead, 332 West Maple,  Winslow Arizona, Only two  tours will be given at this site, one at  10 A. M. and one at 2:P.M.

Learn how to retrofit an existing house into a comfortable,  affordable green home. This unique site is full of numerous operational energy and resource saving systems and practices with
* a grid tied  electrical system,
* solar fountains,
* solar cooking,
* passive solar  greenhouses,
* grey water usage, and rain water harvesting and storage,
* solar tubes for passive  lighting and much, much more  including  special display of a  Hydrogen Fuel Cell generator provided by Ballard Power Systems.

Arkansas Solar Tour

Date:  October 4th

Tour Description:    Two open houses (#21 and #29 Overlook Dr) from 10 AM until 4 PM.  As an added bonus, just around the corner from the two homes on Overlook Dr., three slide presentations on solar energy will be given at a new solar home under construction in Arkansas' first solar subdivision, Woodglen Park.  The home is being built with solar power (no temporary power pole) and each of the homes in the development (35 total) will make at least 50% of their electric needs from PV.   William Ball, chairman of the Arkansas Renewable Energy Association, will present "1000 Watts per Square Meter".  Learn about solar design, solar water heating and solar electric systems.  Off-grid, backup power and net metering will be covered.  The presentation will be given at 10 am, 1 pm and 3 pm on the 4th.   The home under construction is at #18 Woodglen and will be well marked.

Sun City Solar Energy of the Ozarks Solar Tour and Seminar

Instructions for taking this tour: Tour will begin with an Educational Solar Event that will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the Shewmaker Center Auditorium at Northwest Arkansas Community College in Bentonville, AR. (Exit 86 from interstate 540, go right for 300 yards and turn left into the Northwest Arkansas Community College main entrance and follow the signs to the Shewmaker Center. Solar seminar will have signage and is in the auditorium.
