Centralized Solar for Electric Generation
Emissions-free centralized solar power is a good match against peak air conditioning load, and it becomes a more attractive source in view of its independence of shrinking water resources and rising fuel costs.
Today, US utilities operate about 420 MW of centralized solar generating capacity in California, Nevada, and Colorado. 80% of this capacity has operated efficiently for over 20 years. Using today’s technologies, NREL projects that this capacity could jump to 4,000MW, economically, by 2015, and to between 30,000 and 80,000 MW by 2030, depending on the cost of carbon emissions.
To get there, utilities face significant transmission and land-use challenges. The Centralized Solar conference will address:
* Status of the technologies
* Performance requirements
* Power purchase agreements
* Selling RECs vs. selling energy
* Load matching and storage
* Siting and transmission
* Virtual systems
* How solar differs from wind

Illinois Solar Energy Association
Solar 101 Wind 101 Workshops
The Illinois Solar Energy Association, a 501-c-3 organization dedicated to educating the public about solar, wind and other forms of renewable energy, will be conducting Solar 101 and Wind 101 workshops. These workshops will provide comprehensive and generic information on how solar energy and wind power can be used. The Solar 101 workshop will be held from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM and the Wind 101 offerings will held from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM. Online registration is strongly encouraged at www.illinoissolar.org/workshops. For further information on costs and registration, please contact the Illinois Solar Energy Association at www.illinoissolar.org/contact or call 708-267-7965 or 630-260-0424.
These workshops are designed for the following audiences:
• Home and business owners, and decision makers for public and non-profit facilities who are considering solar energy and/or wind power systems for their buildings.
• Architects, engineers, realtors, developers, contractors, government officials and other professionals who are seeking basic information about solar energy and wind power systems.
The Solar 101 workshop will cover a basic overview of how solar energy systems work in Illinois, the types of systems that provide heating, hot water, cooling and electricity, how to choose between different types of systems, economics and regulatory issues. The Wind 101 workshop will cover how wind power systems work in Illinois, the different types of systems, including applications designed to work on or near buildings, incentive, code and regulatory issues involving wind power, and comparison of solar and wind power economics.

The Oxford Conference
Oxford Conference 2008
50 Years On: Resetting the Agenda for Architectural Education
In 1958 the first Oxford Conference set an agenda for architectural education that has been followed for 50 years. The 2008 conference will reset that agenda to meet the evolving drivers of costs of energy and construction, shifting social values and environmental crises and to create a new generation of buildings that are part of the solution to these crises - not the problem.
The conference will be comprised of visionary keynote lectures and a series of forums incorporating the following topics: Studio Culture; 21st Century Building Design; 21st Century City Planning and Urban Design; Building Research and Teaching in the 21st Century.

Renewable Energy: Capturing the Sun
This MIT short course will focus on sunlight, a sustainable and renewable carbon-neutral energy source. Science targeting efficient utilization of solar energy is inherently interdisciplinary, involving biology, inorganic and organic synthesis, solid state chemistry and physics, electrochemistry, chemical kinetics and mechanism, and theoretical and computational chemistry/biology. In addition, it involves concepts of homogeneous and interfacial science between solids, liquids, and gases. The course will focus on the science needed from these disciplines to develop the fundamental enabling science that will contribute to and ultimately lead to a solution of delivering clean energy, in the form of chemical fuels, produced from the sun.
