February 1
Midwest Renewable Energy Association
Basic Photovoltaics for Professionals
This workshop is open to Engineers or Electrical Professionals only.

Participants in this workshop will learn the basics of photovoltaic systems. They will learn to define PV, understand how PV works, identify the four PV system types, describe and identify components, understand the best application and limitations of each system type, define the solar window, understand energy efficiency and load estimates, identify PV mounting types and understand the basics of site assessment tools.

February 8
Midwest Renewable Energy Association
Solar Domestic Hot Water Systems
Learn how to use the sun’s energy for domestic uses: showers, sinks, clothes washer. A household can save 50% or more in energy costs annually, by incorporating a SDHW system. These systems are easy to install and often pay for themselves in energy savings in just a few years. This class provides an overview of a variety of system types. This class will include an examination of an on-site solar hot water heating system.

February 13-14
Midwest Renewable Energy Association
Intermediate Photovoltaics for Professionals
This course is for electrical professionals. Students will gain a basic understanding of PV system design and installation principles. Hands-on activities will include basic installation techniques. This class is required for students planning to take advanced PV workshops. Topics include: system components, battery connections, safety, basic line drawings, and construction of a small PV system.

Topics Include:
PV modules
batteries
wiring configurations
system diagramming
installation techniques
system maintenance

These workshops will provide comprehensive and generic information on how solar energy and wind power can be used. The Solar 101 workshop will be held from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM and the Wind 101 offerings will held from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM. Online registration is strongly encouraged at www.illinoissolar.org/workshops. For further information on costs and registration, please contact the Illinois Solar Energy Association at www.illinoissolar.org/contact or call 708-267-7965 or 630-260-0424.

These workshops are designed for the following audiences:

• Home and business owners, and decision makers for public and non-profit facilities who are considering solar energy and/or wind power systems for their buildings.
• Architects, engineers, realtors, developers, contractors, government officials and other professionals who are seeking basic information about solar energy and wind power systems.

The Solar 101 workshop will cover a basic overview of how solar energy systems work in Illinois, the types of systems that provide heating, hot water, cooling and electricity, how to choose between different types of systems, economics and regulatory issues. The Wind 101 workshop will cover how wind power systems work in Illinois, the different types of systems, including applications designed to work on or near buildings, incentive, code and regulatory issues involving wind power, and comparison of solar and wind power economics.
