The Resource Applications Division is a forum for scientists and renewable energy professionals to meet and discuss all that is current and relevant in the field of renewable energy resource assessment technology, its applications and its implications for our industry, our economy, our environment and our planet as a whole.
The Division’s members study atmospheric physics and the effects of changing meteorological conditions on the delivery of the sun’s energy to the earth’s surface. Some members do predictive modeling of effects of near-term—weather—and long-term—climate—phenomena on solar and wind energy. Other members specializations range from ground-based sensors used for solar radiation detection, to the study of satellite photography and remote sensing for assessing the earths renewable energy resources.
Planners, operators, designers, and financers of renewable energy facilities use the information produced by Resource Applications Division members to better integrate these resources into building systems and renewable energy generating technologies and facilities.
Globally, we are atmospheric physicists, meteorologists, and electrical-mechanical-software engineers, from academia, private industry, and the national laboratories. The common thread that runs through all of the work of the members of Resource Applications Division is the study and quantification of how and when the sun’s energy is transmitted to, and utilized on, our planet.
2006 Annual Meeting
The Resource Applications Division held its annual meeting on July 10, 2006 in Denver, Colorado, in conjunction with the SOLAR 2006 National Solar Energy Conference.
Minutes
Prepared by R. Perez,
Division’s secretary
Twenty one persons in attendance (see appendix)
Chris Gueymard moves to accept previous minutes….no action taken
Governance by-laws - old new election of officers
All present in favor to circulate the new by-laws to all division members and comment before the final adoption vote
Major change is that chair and vice chairs are voted on by nominating committee (to be assembled). They will appoint secretary and treasurers.
Conference Action
Division is involved in the Technical Review Committee (TRC), Forums + conf. planning & workshops
TRC: Division-selected TRC reviewers review all abstracts related to their division. A subset meets in Cleveland. Three reviewers are needed for TRC, 1 to travel to Cleveland.
Frank Vignola, Gary Vliet, Chris Gueymard, AJ Rossman, Steve Wilcox and Ed Kern expressed interest to serve on TRC. Dave Renné, who serves on the National Conference Organizing Committee, will act as the traveling reviewer for the Division.
Forum ideas (ranked in order of priority suggested by those present).
- NSRDB forum
- International resource forum (encompassing SWERA, USAID & NASA activities)
- Operational data for system monitoring
Member services
Board nomination: Dave Renné and Ed Kern are suggested from the floor as candidates for nomination to the ASES Board (to be confirmed by polling division members via e/m)
Other
Letter from the division addressed to the chair of the Energy and Water Congress Committee chair stressing the importance of resource assessment suggested by Frank Vignola who will prepare first draft to the division to be subsequently forwarded to the ASES policy committee
